The ONLY way to determine if the worm gear is needed is to first remove your speedometer and look. If your worm gear is black it needs to also be replaced. If your worm gear is white then you do not need to replace.

All Mustangs have one drive gear and one worm gear. The drive gear will always be bad because of the material it was made of. {SEE WORM GEAR BELOW}

If the original worm gear is black, it is recommended to be replaced as it will fail just like the drive gear. If it is white, it is made of a better material which will not fail. {The only way to determine the color of the original gear is to look first before ordering}
